How to Transfer Images Using a QR Code

How a QR code moves a photo from your phone to your computer: what the code actually contains, how the transfer session works, and whether it is safe.

You have seen QR codes on restaurant tables and parcel labels. The same square of black and white can do something more useful: hand a photograph from the phone in your hand to the computer on your desk, with nothing installed on either one.

It looks like magic the first time. It is not — and the way it works is worth understanding, because once the idea is clear the limits and the safety questions answer themselves.

A QR code is just a picture of some text

That is the whole idea. A QR code is a way of writing a short piece of text so that a camera can read it — usually a web address, sometimes a phone number or a few words. The pattern of squares is the text, encoded. Nothing is stored inside it, and nothing travels through it.

So when a page shows you a QR code to start a transfer, the code contains an address: a page on the web, plus a short one-time key that identifies this particular transfer. That is all. Your photographs are nowhere near it.

Why a code instead of something simpler

Because the alternative is typing. Two devices that have never met need some way to agree on which conversation they are joining, and that agreement has to cross the gap between a screen and a person.

The old way was to read a string off one screen and type it into the other — slow, and easy to get wrong when the string is long enough to be worth using. A camera reads the same string in half a second and makes no typing mistakes. Nothing else about the transfer depends on the code; it is simply the fastest way to move an address from one device to another.

How the transfer actually works

Four steps, in order. It is worth seeing them laid out, because each one explains something about what is possible and what is not.

  1. The computer opens a transfer session. You choose Images on the Bridge and the server sets aside a temporary space for this one job, with a key that exists only for it.
  2. A QR code carries that key to the phone. The code on screen is a web address with the key in it. Scanning it opens that address on the phone, which is how the phone joins the session the computer just opened.
  3. You choose the images. The phone shows a page with one button on it. Pick as many pictures as you want; they upload to the session one after another.
  4. The computer collects them. Each picture appears in a list as it finishes, with its file size and its pixel dimensions, ready to download or to open in a tool.

Notice what is not in that list: at no point do the two devices talk to each other. The session in the middle is what makes the whole thing work across networks, and it is also the honest answer to where your photographs go.

A QR code holds a few hundred characters at most. A single photograph is several million bytes. Even if you wanted to put a picture inside a code, there is nowhere for it to go.

Scanning it, in practice

There is no scanner app to find. The built-in camera on both iPhone and Android recognises a QR code on its own: open the camera, point it at the square, and a notification or banner appears at the top of the screen. Tap that, and the page opens.

If nothing happens, it is almost always one of four things:

Nothing about this only works one way. Switch the direction on the computer and the order changes: you choose the pictures on the computer first — from the disk, from Google Drive or Dropbox, from a link, or straight off the clipboard — and the code is generated for those files. Scan it, and the phone receives them and saves them where downloads normally go.

Same four steps, same session, opposite direction of travel.

Is it safe to transfer images this way?

Two separate questions live inside that one, and they deserve separate answers.

Is scanning a QR code safe in general? A code is only as trustworthy as the address inside it, and that is the real risk with codes in the wild: a sticker over a genuine one on a parking meter sends you to a convincing fake. Your phone shows you the address before it opens anything. Read it. A code shown to you by a page you already had open on your own computer is a different situation from one printed on a lamp post.

What happens to the pictures? They are held by the temporary session and nothing else. The key inside the code can be claimed by one phone and only one — a second device scanning the same square gets nothing. The session clears itself on a timer measured in minutes, ten by default, and the photographs are deleted when it ends or the moment you clear the list on the computer. There is no account, so there is no library for a picture to end up in.

What comes across, and how much

The file, not a rendering of it. A photograph transferred this way arrives byte for byte as it left, EXIF block and all — which is the practical difference from sending a picture through a chat app, where what arrives has been rebuilt smaller.

Up to 25 pictures in one transfer and 150 MB across a session, by default. One detail specific to iPhones: what gets stored is named after what the bytes turn out to be rather than after the name it arrived with, so a HEIC photograph lands with a .heif extension. Same picture. Convert Image turns it into a JPG if anything downstream objects.

Common questions

Do both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi?

No. The session lives on the internet rather than on your local network, so the phone can be on mobile data while the computer is on a wired connection elsewhere. This is the main thing a QR transfer can do that AirDrop and Quick Share cannot.

Do I need an app to scan the code?

No. The camera app that came with the phone reads QR codes on both iOS and Android. Scanner apps exist and none of them is necessary.

What if someone else scans my code?

They cannot use it. The key is claimable once, so whichever phone gets there first holds the session and any other scan is refused. The code also stops working on its own after about ten minutes.

Can I transfer images from a computer to a phone with a QR code?

Yes — switch the direction first, then scan. The code is generated after you have chosen the files, so it belongs to that specific set of pictures.

Does it work between iPhone and Windows, or Android and Mac?

Yes, in every combination. Two browsers are doing the work, and a browser does not care what the other end is running.

Does one scan cover more than one picture?

Yes — you scan once and the session stays open, so everything you pick afterwards travels on that single scan. A session carries up to 25 images and 150 MB by default, and there is no reason to scan again between them.
