How to Transfer Photos from Phone to Computer

Move photos from a phone to a computer without losing quality: every method compared, plus the HEIC problem and what a chat app does to a picture.

Your phone is the camera you actually carry, so it is where the pictures are. Your computer is where they get used — dropped into a document, cropped for a listing, attached to an insurance claim, printed. Getting them from one to the other should be trivial, and the reason it often is not comes down to a single question nobody asks until afterwards: did the photograph arrive intact?

This guide covers every practical way to move pictures off a phone, what each one does to the file on the way, and the two format problems that catch people out.

The thing most guides skip: what happens to the file

A photograph is not just an image. It is an image plus an EXIF block recording the camera, the lens, the exposure, the date, and often where you were standing. Some transfer methods carry all of that across untouched. Others quietly rebuild the picture smaller and throw the rest away.

That sixth row is the one that ruins jobs. A 12-megapixel photograph sent through a chat app can arrive as something under a megapixel — fine on a phone screen, useless for print, for cropping, or for anything that needs detail. If a picture has to stay usable, do not send it through a chat app.

The five ways, ranked by how much they ask of you

A browser and a QR code

Nothing to install on either device. Open the image transfer page on the computer, point the phone’s camera at the code, tap the notification, and select as many pictures as you like in one go. They upload one after another and appear on the computer as they finish, each showing its file size and its pixel dimensions — which is the quickest way to tell a 12-megapixel original from a screenshot at a glance.

It works between any phone and any computer because the transfer happens between two browsers, not between two operating systems. The pictures are carried by a temporary session rather than passed device to device, which is why the two do not need to be on the same network or in the same building. The session expires by itself — ten minutes by default — and the files are deleted when it ends.

AirDrop, if everything you own is Apple

The best experience on this list when it applies. Select the photographs, tap Share, tap the Mac, accept on the Mac. Full quality, no accounts, no re-encoding. Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and need to be near one another, and the moment either end is Windows or Android it stops being an option.

iCloud Photos or Google Photos

If your library already syncs, the picture is arguably on the computer before you think about it. This is the low-effort answer for photographs that belong in a library anyway.

Two caveats. Sync is on its own schedule, so a picture taken two minutes ago may not be on the desktop yet. And downloading from a web library often hands you a re-rendered copy rather than the original — on Google Photos, “Storage saver” quality is compressed by design, and the difference is permanent.

A USB cable

Still unbeatable for volume. If you are clearing a year of photographs off a phone, plug it in and copy the DCIM folder; you will be limited by the drive rather than by anything else.

On Android connected to Windows, pull down the notification shade and switch USB mode from charging to file transfer, or the phone shows up as a charging device with no files on it. On iPhone connected to Windows, tap Trust This Computer first. On Android connected to a Mac, you will need extra software before anything appears at all.

Email

Works everywhere and caps out fast. Modern phone photographs run 3–8 MB each, so a 25 MB attachment limit is four or five pictures. Some mail clients also offer to “resize images for faster sending”, which is the same quality loss as a chat app wearing a polite hat.

The HEIC problem

Every iPhone since 2017 saves photographs as HEIC by default. It is a good format — roughly half the size of a JPEG at the same quality — and it is still not universally supported. Old software on Windows, some content management systems and plenty of upload forms will simply refuse it.

You have two choices. Change the phone: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible makes the camera save JPEG from then on, at the cost of larger files. Or transfer as HEIC and convert afterwards, which keeps the smaller files on the phone.

One detail worth knowing if you transfer through Pixpoo: what gets stored is named after what the bytes turn out to be rather than after the name the file arrived with, so a HEIC lands with a .heif extension. It is the same picture, unchanged. If something further along will not open it, Convert Image turns it into a JPG or a PNG in the browser.

Screenshots, GIFs and screen recordings

Screenshots are PNGs and travel like any other image. Animated GIFs are images too and survive a transfer intact — though a chat app will often convert one to video, which is not the same file any more.

Screen recordings are not images at all. They are MP4 or MOV video, and they need a method that carries video: a cable, AirDrop, Quick Share or cloud storage. An image transfer will not take them.

Once the pictures are on the computer

Moving them is rarely the actual goal. The usual next step is one of these:

Common questions

How do I transfer photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC?

A cable gets you the DCIM folder. iCloud for Windows keeps a synced copy. A browser transfer needs neither — open the image page on the PC, scan the code with the iPhone, choose the pictures. HEIC photographs cross fine; convert them afterwards if something cannot read them.

How do I transfer photos from Android to a Mac?

This is the combination with the fewest built-in options, because a cable needs extra software and AirDrop does not apply. Google Photos works if the library syncs. A browser transfer works with nothing installed on either side.

Will my photos lose quality?

Only if the method re-encodes them. A cable, AirDrop, Quick Share and a browser transfer all move the actual file. Chat apps rebuild it smaller. If you are unsure, check the file size on both ends — a picture that lost four megabytes on the way lost detail with it.

How many photos can I send at once?

Does the location data come across?

With any method that moves the file rather than re-encoding it, yes — the EXIF block travels with the picture, including GPS coordinates if the camera recorded them.
